The Keto Diet
What IS the Keto Diet?
An introduction:
Many people wonder what the keto diet is, or have misconceptions about what it is. People hear about keto, the ketogenic lifestyle, etc, and often let it pass by as a "trending diet".
The term "keto" in use as a diet, is fairly new, but the diet itself is quite old. You can ask pretty much anyone "How do you lose weight?" and get an answer along the lines of "Cut back on carbs and sugar".
Keto is just a new name for an old diet. The name originates from "ketosis", which is when your body, having run out of glucose (sugars) to burn, begins to eat away at your fat instead. The fat breaks down and releases "ketones", which your body then uses for fuel instead of the glucose that it normally would.
Think... swapping diesel for gasoline. You're burning ketones instead of glucose... fat instead of sugar.
It's good to keep in mind that not all "sugar" says sugar, exactly. Most fruits have a good amount of fructose, which is the fruit form of sugar. Milk has lactose, which is the milk form of sugar. Artificial sweeteners are also to be avoided, except in cases where they still manage to have no sugar or carbs, like the Stevia extract that we offer here. It's 100% organic, so no worries about chemicals either.
It's also good to keep in mind that "diet" doesn't always mean eating less. A diet is simply what organisms consume to live. That said, the keto diet is more of a change in WHAT we are eating... in this case, avoiding carbs and sugars. The good news is that protein is still very much on the table, and delicious in so many ways.
